A group of 16 mentors and mentees from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan (BBBSSEM) watched the August 5 Tigers game from the Macomb Group’s suite at Comerica Park. For 6 of the 8 mentees (known as Littles) this was their first ever Tigers game, but the entire group, including the mentors (Bigs) was thrilled to watch the game from a great vantage point while enjoying ballpark favorites like hot dogs, sliders, chicken fingers, pizza, peanuts, and popcorn, also courtesy of the Macomb Group.

Ian Thomas, from The Macomb Group, was an outstanding host to the group of mentors and mentees, who shared their experiences with BBBS’ one-to-one mentoring program. Each match, a Big and a Little, meets twice a month for fun and engaging activities like hanging out, or just talking. The Littles gain an adult outside of their family for support and guidance, and the Bigs experience the unique joy of making a difference in a young person’s life. Activities include playing video games and sports (basketball, football, and baseball are popular), going for bike rides, and trying new things together. BBBS mentorships are proven to help Littles fulfill their potential by building confidence, making healthier choices, and achieving more in education and career, and to help Bigs find more purpose and joy in their lives.

Though it wasn’t the first-place Tigers’ best night – they lost 6-3 to the Minnesota Twins – all the Bigs and Littles were delighted with the evening and expressed their gratitude to The Macomb Group. Little Hannah, a first timer, said, “It was so much fun. Amazing experience!” Her Big Grace added, “We had a great time.” For more information on BBBSSEM, visit their website https://www.bbbssoutheastmi.org
